assistive technology

(1) Assistive technology (AT) is  a generic term used to refer to a group of software or hardware devices by which people with disabilities can access computers. They can be specially developed and marketed devices or off-the-shelf products that have been modified. Assistive technology can include devices such as alternate keyboards and mice, voice recognition software, monitor magnification software, multiple switch joysticks, and text-to-speech communication aids.

Outside of computer and Internet terminology the term assistive technology is also used when referring to any device which is designed for people with disabilities to carry on daily life (e.g. wheelchairs, mechanical arms).

(2) Assistive Technology Inc. (ATI) is one of the developers who produce hardware and software solutions for people with disabilities. The company is located in Boston, Massachusetts.
