Short for Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator, EDSAC was an early computer dated around 1949. EDSAC performed its first calculation at the Cambridge University in England. EDSAC used mercury delay lines for memory and 3,000 vacuum tubes for logic. Programs were input using 5-hole punched tape and output was via a teleprinter. EDSAC 99 The Computer Laboratory celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the EDSAC 1 computer in April 1999 with a two day meeting, including talks about EDSAC 1 and subsequent work in the Laboratory, historic exhibits and demonstrations of current research, together with a reception and dinner.
