File Replication service
Last modified: Thursday, April 16, 2009

Abbreviated as FRS, File Replication service is a multithreaded, multiple-master replication engine in Microsoft Windows NT versions 3.x and 4.0. Windows 2000-based domain controllers and servers use FRS to replicate system policies and logon scripts for Windows 2000-based and earlier clients. The File Replication service replaces the LAN Manager Replication (LMREPL) service.

FRS can also replicate content between Windows 2000-based servers that host the same fault-tolerant distributed file system (Dfs) roots or child node replicas.

See "Best Practices for Sysvol Maintenance" from Microsoft Help and Support.
File system junctions are used extensively in the Sysvol structure and are a feature of NTFS file system 3.0. You must be aware of the existence of junction points and how they operate so that you can avoid data loss or corruption that may occur if you modify the Sysvol structure.

Win Server 2008 Directory Services, SYSVOL DFS Replication
The term Active Directory is most commonly equated with the NTDS.DIT database and its characteristics; however, its functionality is affected in a profound manner by content of the SYSVOL folder, residing by default, directly under the Windows directory (although its placement is customizable) and providing file system storage required to implement a wide range of Group Policies.
