Refers to the broad industry related to using computers in concert with telecommunications systems. This includes dial-up service to the Internet as well as all types of networks that rely on a telecommunications system to transport data. The term has evolved to refer to systems used in automobiles that combine wireless communication with GPS tracking. The term is further evolving to include a wide range of telecommunication functions that originate or end inside automobiles.
European Commission Telematics Application Programme Describes the efforts of a European research program aimed at stimulating RTD in applications of information and/or communications technologies. It has 13 sectors, which include telematics for education and training, libraries, language engineering, and information engineering. European Telematics Observatory Offers information on projects, research, publications and resources related to the efforts of the European Telematics Applications Programme.
